In the chaos, the RLF discovers and discloses the existence of “Red Shift”, an American system to destroy Alaska with buried nuclear weapons should the BETA ever cross the Bering Strait into North America. September 21, 2001: Total Eclipse: An uprising by the Refugee Liberation Front (RLF) and allied forces briefly takes control of Yukon Base in Alaska, killing UN pilots and destroying their TSFs. Noah and Adrienne enter a TSF race across Lake Michigan and win. Noah befriends Curtis Buckley, a poor young man his own age, who is attracted to nationalist groups online. His father, Paul, befriends US Congressman Gabriel Ryan, who is planning a run for Senate as a secret rear-guard effort to protect Alternative IV. June, 2001: Muv-Luv Undertow: Noah Wilson modifies an abandoned Japanese TSF and eventually becomes its test pilot.
While repairing their computers, he uncovers an ultra-nationalist saboteur who is trying to drive out the UN. Under duress, he joins a UN military program at a US Army base in northern Michigan. May, 2001: Muv-Luv Undertow: American college student Noah Wilson encounters an escaped BETA in a forest and is rescued by a TSF piloted by the now 21 year old Adrienne. The use of experimental G-bombs in the attack leave several time-space anomalies at the site. Orbital construction of the Alternative V migrant fleet begins in 1997.Īugust 5-9, 1999: A joint UN-Japan mission destroys the BETA hive at Yokohama, capturing its reactor for use in Alternative IV. Alternative V would abandon the Earth altogether, sending a small number of refugees into space to continue the human race, while those left behind stage an all-out counterattack. Alternative IV would build on previous “Alternative Plans” as a means of understanding and communicating with the BETA, to find a weakness or reach a truce. Two competing secret plans for turning the course of the war emerge. As they spread, they build “hives”, enormous underground mining and regeneration facilities. In the resulting civilian evacuation, four-year-old Adrienne Clemenceau is separated from her family.ġ990s: Most of Europe and Asia fall to the BETA. The coup is foiled and the line holds, thanks in part to support from western European troops. The United States immediately devastates the site with nuclear weapons, neutralizing the BETA, but making half of Canada uninhabitable in the process.ġ974: The Tactical Surface Fighter (TSF), a humanoid mech reconfigured in part from military fighter jets, becomes the lynchpin of humanity’s defense against the BETA, as it can fly low enough to avoid Laser-class BETA, and fight in a variety of environments.ġ983: Schwarzesmarken: Holding Europe’s eastern front against the BETA, the East German government faces a coup d’état from its own secret police, the Stasi. July 5, 1974: The BETA make a second landing near Athabasca, Saskatchewan. Chinese and Soviet troops attempt to contain the invasion, but are overwhelmed by the appearance of the Laser-class BETA, which eliminate human air attacks. January, 2002: At some point, Takeru is pulled mentally and bodily into the Unlimited timeline.ġ958: A probe on Mars sees an unidentified object that is later determined to be humanity’s first contact with the BETA.ġ967: The BETA reach the Moon, war breaks out.Īpril 19, 1973: The BETA make their first landing on Earth, near Kashgar in western China. The protagonist of the visual novels, Takeru Shirogane, is introduced in Extra, is then pulled into the Unlimited timeline, and later goes back in time and changes history, thereby creating the Alternative timeline. The Extra timeline is our own world, while Unlimited and Alternative take place on an Earth that has been invaded by aliens called the “BETA” (“Beings of Extra-Terrestrial Origin which are an Adversary to humanity”). The Muv-Luv franchise takes place across several different timelines, as established in the original visual novel trilogy: Muv-Luv Extra, Muv-Luv Unlimited, and Muv-Luv Alternative.
